Featured Shop of the Week: Heritage Heartcraft

This week our feature shop is the creation of a multi-talented, helpful, compassionate, & creative person- Heritage Heartcraft by Cara Louise. I'll let Cara tell you more about herself & her craft.

logo- designed by graphic artist extraordinaire Mad Queen Mother
Working to keep the delicate art of thread crochet alive and well as I carry on the beautiful art of my grandmother, with every stitch made with love and prayers. Thread crochet certainly doesn't need to be relegated to the 'just for grandmothers' category. While there is a great vintage appeal to the craft, today's vibrant color choices in crochet thread mean that retro can indeed become modern again!

'Royal Pineapple Seraphim', pattern again from Crochet Memories, large 11 inch tall treetop angel, this one worked in ecru and antique white, with gold trim.
Time is a common issue among so many of us. My family-raising days are behind me, it's just me and the husband now, but there's still so many things that need to or ought to get done. It's easy to fall into the trap of 'hobby' thinking, and I really do use my kitchen timer a LOT to schedule things that I either know need doing but don't want to do (like the dishes?!); or things that I like to do but could get WAY too lost in (like Pinterest browsing!). Deciding on a reasonable amount of time to devote to something, and then going gang-busters to 'beat-the-clock' works for me. I really should buy kitchen timers by the dozen I wear through them!

'Pineapple Lace Bikini Shorts', my own pattern, and my first venture into garment design using a classic thread crochet design element.

The second big issue for me is knowing where, when, and how to market myself. There are just so many venues, online and local, that it can get overwhelming sometimes trying to make good decisions about investing my focus so I get the best return.

'Butterfly Mobile', a closeup of my own Butterfly pattern, fashioned into an elegant grown-up mobile.
My favorite quote and guiding principle-
He who works with his hands is a laborer.
He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman.
He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist.
~St. Francis of Assisi

Custom orders are my delight! In fact, my work is almost exclusively custom. The only time I have ReadyToShip items is when I want to try out a new idea or pattern. I just don't have room to keep everything I make!

'Moravian Star Ornament', my own pattern, makes a perfect tree ornament or suncatcher.
I have been crocheting almost 40 years, since about age 8 when my mother taught me with regular yarn and larger crochet hooks. A year or so later, she found a bag that had been her mother's which contained some gorgeous doilies her mother had made, along with some skinny crochet thread and some impossibly small steel crochet hooks.

'Wedding Lace Doily', pattern by Crochet Memories, which I loved before but now even more since the graphic artist who made my logo didn't even know about this doily and yet my logo matches almost perfectly!
I fell in love on the spot, created my very first doily without any pattern by copying one of hers, and have been designing and crafting small articles such as doilies, coasters, snowflakes and angels ever since! Every time I make something, I feel a kinship with the grandmother I was never able to meet, and so her spirit is alive in me- all these years later!

  1. I think I would use it on the Handcrafted Crochet Flower Candle Holder with glass insert. I burn a lot of candles! (Although I am in love with the Irish Angel)
