Featured Shop of the Week- GipsonWands

This week's featured shop is my husband Scott's shop, GipsonWands. He has written a few guest posts for the blog previously, including Making a Wand, Why Locally Sourced Matters, and Making a Solid Wood Crochet Hook. Now Scott will tell you more about his business & how he got started.

My business started with my desire to have my own wand. I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, and I wanted something that was true to what is described in the book, but when I went online alot of people were selling resin cast wands or wands made from cheap wood stained to look like a different wood. I felt that these weren't authentic. So I decided to try to make my own. Instead of going to a lumber store I really wanted to use something more personal, wood I had harvested personally from a tree. When I was done making that first wand I started making wands for friends and family. Everyone seemed really pleased with the wands I had made. It was then that I started Gipsonwands.

Selling wands it a very niche business therefore I find that outreach and marketing are the most difficult aspect of my business, making beautiful wands is easy by comparison to letting people know that those item exist.

I'm a huge Sci-fi fantasy geek, and love to immerse myself in a good book, tv series, or movie. Besides the Harry Potter series, I Love the DiscWorld books, the Star Trek universe, and Tolkien's Middle-Earth just to mention a few.

It's not widely know that lumber you buy commercially has been sprayed with chemicals to stop it from warping and cracking to much when drying. Every wand I make is either from lumber I have harvested and milled or lumber that I have salvaged from waste. I am dedicated to this and have turned down making wands because I couldn't get the lumber locally that people have requested.

In addition to wand-making, Scott makes crochet hooks (upon request), bookmarks, keychains, & buttons. Scott has a degree in Graphic Design, and does graphic design work under the name Retro Rocket Graphic Design. You can see his work in his Cafepress store, plus the logos for GipsonWands and Violet's Buds.

You can find GipsonWands online on Facebook, Twitter, & Storenvy. Scott is giving away an Osage Orange solid wood bookmark to one lucky fan! The bookmark, like the wands, is handmade with locally sourced, naturally dried Osage Orange with a hand-rubbed Linseed oil finish.
