Featured Shop of the Week: Dandelion Wishes

We took a break last week, and are happy to be back! Our featured shop this week is a great one. I recently ordered from Dandelion Wishes, and am excited to share this talented doll-maker with you!

Dandelion Wishes is the creation of Mimi Panormios. She says, "I have such a heart for children.  I believe each one is a precious blessing.  I love creating special handmade toys for little ones.  I have had my etsy shop since 2008 but it wasn't until my son graduated from high school in 2010 that I really began to build my business."

Getting Organized- Beads & Buttons

I must admit, I have a hard time staying organized. When I start creating, I want to see everything I have so that I can find the perfect addition. Of course, when I'm done, I rarely take the same amount of time to clean up than I do to set up. In my effort to get organized, I've looked to Pinterest and other bloggers for ideas. I will post a series on the organization process, in hopes that it will keep me committed.

Lucky for me, I get a lot of help from my husband. I've amassed a sizeable collection of beads, buttons, & other misc "jewels." The bulk of my collection has come from my grandma, plus many more from garage sales, thrift stores, & clearance racks. My husband sorted my collection by color for me one evening.. It is so much easier to grab a jar of blue buttons and find what I want, than to open a tote of everything mixed together.

Featured Shop of the Week: Eternal Girl

Happy Sunday & Happy St. Patrick's Day! We have a new shop to share with you. This week our featured shop is Eternal Girl.

Eternal Girl specializes in handmade jewelry and greeting cards. The shop includes henna designed necklaces, rings, key chains, and cards. All orders are uniquely hand drawn, and the shop also offers custom orders. 

Owner & creator, Julia says "Eternal Girl is a new endeavor, and after a year of making pendant necklaces as gifts for friends, I recently opened my Etsy shop August 2012. I first became interested in henna designs a few years ago at my old job; most of the women I bonded with were Indian and I was introduced to henna. I've always loved to draw, and especially loved the way henna was free flowing and free spirited."


I asked Julia what the most challenging aspect of being a small business owner, and she said, "Getting my brand 'out there.' Online networking is a great tool, but in such a huge ocean my small business has yet to make a big splash. Of course because I am just starting out, I am just having fun meeting other shop owners at this point."

Julia's favorite way to relax is swinging on a swing-set. She likes to drink IBC black cherry soda, and shop at TJMaxx. She says she loves meeting new people on Facebook.

Reading Brings You Together Online Book Party

I've asked Kelli to tell us why she loves Usborne Books… "I met my supervisor last year at a local fair. She was showing me books that were age appropriate for my kids. She was also telling me about some good chapter books for my daughter. She is an advanced reader and it is hard to find books for her that are of appropriate content. My supervisor was telling me about the dual reader books. That is when I knew I needed to join."
 
"The book was The Little Book of Farmyard Tales. It has 2 lines on each page of the story. The first one is simple and to the point. The second is more detail. If your little one won’t sit still you can read just the top portion, otherwise read the whole story. There is a little duck hidden on each page which keeps even the most active toddler still so you can read each page. Lastly, it grows with them so when they start reading, they can read the top and you read the bottom, until they can read the whole story themselves!"

Creating with Friends

We are so excited to announce our latest collaboration project! Violet's Buds teamed up with The Wrappery IN: Custom Yarn Decor to bring you this wonderful nursery set.

You may remember The Wrappery IN: Custom Yarn Decor from their feature in December. Both The Wrappery IN and Violet's Buds are members of the Mad Mad Makers on Facebook. The brilliant coordinator & moderator of the group, blogger Mad Mad Me, suggested to the group to brainstorm collaborations, which lead us to this project.


We decided to create a set perfect for a baby shower, nursery, or new baby gift. This lovely 14 inch wreath is dark gray with pink and white yarn intermixed with ribbon, gems, and flowers. The flowers were created by Violet's Buds and are the same as the hair accessories. The wreath alone is $40, but if you purchase one or more matching hair accessories from Violet's Bud's, you will receive a 20% discount on both items, making this wreath just $32!

Creator, designer & owner of  A Single Dream, Christine says, "I have always kind of felt that I was born in the wrong time period, so strong is my love for all things vintage.  I am always most attracted to antique jewelry; victorian, art deco and even boho, and I like to give a bit of vintage flavor to a lot of my work while creating something that someone would want to wear -now-." 

"I'm also motivated by the whimsical --  fantasy, myth and romance, and the child within me that believes in magic and miracles has never died.  I'm enchanted by sparkle, movement and vivid colors, and like to bring that into my designs." 

Christine adds, "My favorite work is custom, as it allows me to meld the preferences of the customer with my own style and deliver something that they are as happy to wear as I was to make it. A Cookie Experiment

We are suffering from cabin fever. The recent snowstorms, and the lack of transportation have left my daughter & I home-bound during the day. In a moment of desperation (and not wanting to turn on the tv) I told my little one we could make cookies.
I didn't set out initially to make healthier cookies, it was merely to experiment with different ingredients. I started with the basic chocolate chip cookie recipe, and made some changes. Now, these aren't the prettiest cookies at the party, but they are tasty.
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened  I subbed 1/2c coconut oil, softened AND 1 mashed ripe banana
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar I replaced the sugar with 2/3c of agave nectar* (I used Xagave)
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar, reduced to 1/2c
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 c chocolate chips
ingredient additions I made: 
  • 1/3c ground flaxseed 
  • 1/3c quick-cook oats
  • 1/4 tsp cream of tartar 
  • 2 tbs unsweetened cocoa powder
  • coconut flakes
*the package of agave nectar said to use 2/3c nectar for every 1c sugar

Zeleny Arts & Crafts Fair

Violet's Buds is excited to announce our acceptance to the Zeleny Arts & Crafts Fair for the second year in a row! Violet's Buds will be at the show on March 30th in Parkville, MO, sharing a booth with GipsonWands.
Zeleny is a handmade art & craft show, showcasing a wide variety of eco-friendly artists. Zeleny translates into "green" in Czech. The creators of the event, The A-Team say, "To us, green means using our resources wisely. Many times, creativity is key in living a green life." Additionally, Heartland Center and Graydon Springs Outdoor Legacy will be receiving all of the proceeds (vendor fees and donations) from the show. Zeleny has expanded this year! In addition to the show on March 30th in Parkville, MO, a second craft fair will take place in Springfield, MO on April 5-6th. At each show a limited number of swag books will be handed out, so get there early! During the Parkville show, Heartland Center is hosting an Easter Egg Hunt open to all.

Featured Shop of the Week: Origami Delights

I am happy to announce Origami Delights as our featured shop this week.



 I have had the pleasure of working with Nedra of Origami Delights on a few projects, including the Fall Festival product photo shoot, and the 30 Days of Thanks giveaway on her blog last November. Nedra says she started this journey because, "Honestly, I began folding paper as a means to "keep my hands busy" while I was on some downtime from work. I never expected the amount of joy I would find from folding each and every piece. I continue to create because I love what I do. Many people say to me "Wow, folding all those (stars, cranes, flowers, etc) must be monotonous!" but I find it both calming AND fun. I have folded thousands and thousands of tiny stars, hundreds of flowers and cranes and so much more, and not ONCE have I ever thought "Man, I really don't want to finish these" or "I'm tired of folding." It's something I don't ever see myself growing tired of."
