Meet this week's featured shop, Shantara's Soaps, and the talented owner/creator Anita.
I live on a small farm in the heart of the Virginia Countryside. I have been making goats milk soaps for about 7 years now. I got started when we had a lot of milk from our goats and needed to find an outlet for it to pay the feed bill. Soap was the perfect product. We combine our milk with wonderful oils, local ingredients, great scents and essential oils, plus herbs, spices, and other fun things, to make a product that people love. My daughter helps out a lot and we have a permanent booth in the Lynchburg Community Market Heritage Crafters Gallery in Lynchburg, Virginia. We also do a number of festivals and craft shows each year and are slowly increasing our online presence.
In my spare time I am a Natural Hoof Care Practitioner, caring for horse feet using holistic methods of barefoot trimming and rubber booties instead of nail-on shoes for those horses that need hoof protection. I'm also a full time student at Randolph College in Lynchburg, working towards a BFA in English/Creative Writing, with an emphasis in Theatre. My favorite time of the day is BEDTIME!
At this point my biggest challenge is SPACE! Or I should say, it is a LACK of space. I'm still soaping in my kitchen, although I tried to move the whole affair upstairs to an unused room...I'm finding that I still prefer to soap in the kitchen near the stove, and sink, which I use a lot. I'm hoping an increase in sales this year will allow us to start work on a new workshop here at home so all the soaping paraphernalia can be moved out of our living space and I can expand the business.
Horses are my absolute passion and goats are high on my list of favorites too! Goats are such goofy and whimsical characters. A person cannot stay mad or sad for long around a quirky herd of Alpine Dairy Goats.
In addition to making soap, I also trim horse hooves for a living and am a full time student!
My parents have had the greatest influence on me. Growing up, my mom and dad made everything a person could imagine. My dad built a tractor when he needed a tracter, a satellite dish when they decided they wanted one of those. He also built trailers, furniture, and a million other things. My mom is a talented crafter and taught me to love making things from scratch. Knitting, crocheting, sewing, etc. I learned it all from her.
