Featured Shop of the Week: The Happy Wreath

This week's feature is The Happy Wreath, a vibrant & unique handmade wreath shop. A wreath is a form of greeting. "The first thing a person sees of your home reflects the feeling they'll have when they enter it. A wreath can display happiness, excitement, grief, pain, pleasure, love, joy, energy, and all sorts of other feelings. Adorn your door with a wreath to set the mood for your guests."

Owner Lauren Whitney began making wreaths to keep herself busy while her husband was deployed to Iraq for a year. She says, "I had some interest from some of the wives on base for custom orders, and just went from there. I started very simple, and just got more elaborate from there. Everything I saw became a potential wreath, and I even went to Home Depot once and saw shiny white rope, bought it, and came up with the white wreath that is now in my Facebook album. Inspiration is everywhere, and my mind can never go too far!!"

Featured Shop of the Week: Sew Much Love Patterns

We have a great featured shop this week that I am excited to share with you. Sew Much Love Patterns is a very creative pattern shop, and also does custom crochet, knit, & sewing orders.

Sew Much Love Patterns owner, April Hudson, has been crocheting for over 20 years. She says, "I really began to pick it back up during the pregnancy of my daughter 5 years ago. After the birth of my son 2 years ago I began selling finished items and started designing my own patterns. My children and family motivate and inspire me on a daily basis. My children love to model new designs and help me to name them. I also take custom sewing orders, this is my daughters favorite thing that I do! There are always new dresses in our house :)"  Like many small business owners, April says the most challenging part is finding a balance between work and family, especially during deadlines and family events.

Product Photography Tips

Just about everyone I know enjoys photography. For some, its a hobby, for others its a chance to record all the precious memories. A few have been able to make a living from turning their passion for photography into their career. {Talking about passion, I highly recommend reading this blog post from Kansas City photographer, Brent Gumminger}

For a crafter turned small business owner, photography takes on a slightly different role. Your creations may take a painstakingly long time to finish. You may agonize over every tiny detail, until everything is just right. Once your item is completed, you aren't done yet. The next, and arguably the most important, step is photographing your product.

Since many of us sell online, rather than only craft fairs, having a photo that beautifully represents your creation is key. With so much competition, an eye-catching photo is important to get your customer's attention. I'd like to share some of the tips I've learned with you. You don't have to own a fancy setup to make your work look great.

Featured Shop of the Week: Simply Stitched by Sheri Anne

It is Sunday, and that means its time for a new featured shop! This week we're featuring Simply Stitched by Sheri Anne, a talented crocheter. All of her items are "hand made with extra love and care."

Sheri Anne started crocheting about 6 months ago when she retired(not by choice) due to Rheumatoid Arthritis. Sheri describes, "I found it to be a new passion of mine.  I was taught to crochet back when I was 10 by my father, put my needles away when I was 19, after the birth of my first daughter.  I then picked them back up and found that writing patterns was also a new passion.

I think the idea of having a granddaughter one day motivates and inspires me.  I love designing little dresses and sweaters. I keep creating because I love the idea of keeping my hands active and because I love the outcome of what a piece of string can accomplish."

I asked Sheri to describe the challenges she faces as a small business owner, and she explained, "The most challenging thing about having my own business is getting my name out there. There is slot of creative and beautiful items out there.  Finding something unique is also a challenge. One day I will find my little niche."

Sheri likes the color pink, and the combo of pink & black. Her favorite way to relax is crocheting. " I find that it helps me to drown out the world and free my mind."

Sheri would like her fans to know "that I can be really creative and can make almost anything.  i love to do custom orders because it gives me the chance to be creative through someone else and say WOW will you look at that!!"

You can find Sheri's beautiful work on her website, Facebook page, Craftsy pattern shop, and Etsy store. Sheri is giving one lucky fan the "Must Be A Lady" fingerless glove pattern. To win, enter using the Rafflecopter widget below. The only required entries are to like Simply Stitched by Sheri Anne & Violet's Buds Facebook pages. There are several optional entries to increase your chances of winning, including daily entries for sharing the giveaway, and for making a purchase. It is always nice to stop by the featured shop's page and say hi.
The giveaway starts on Sunday January 13th, and the winner will be chosen & announced at 8pm CST on Saturday, January 19th.

New Valentine's Day accessories

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a nice holiday. The new year means time for new items. We are filling our shop with fun new Valentine's Day hair accessories.

This year, we wanted something to stand out from the regular pink & red rosettes and ruffles. After experimenting with kanzashi flower petals, we came up with these cute little hearts. As you can see by the photos, we've placed the hearts in several different designs.

Featured Shop of the Week: Baby B's Crochet Boutique

This week our featured shop is a relatively new shop. Baby B's Crochet Boutique started in August 2012.

Baby B's Crochet Boutique's owner Heaven Cash says, "I am a wife and mother of two boys! I started my business page On August 9th, 2012. I learned to crochet from my grandma. However, I only new how to do a double crochet and make blankets. I kept seeing patterns for hats, scarves, and booties that I just loved. I kept telling myself I wish I could make that. I tried and got frustrated and gave up for about a month. I then decided to try again. I got some help from the pattern designers on how to read the patterns and ever since then I have been doing great.

An interesting fact about myself would be that besides crocheting, my other hobby is bowling. When I was in high school I was in the bowling league :)

The people who had the most influence on me would be my grandma, Michelle Norton ( Michelle's Masterpieces),and  RAKJPATTERNS.

I Keep adding items to my shop because I see cute patterns out there and I just think to myself how cute it would be on my nieces and nephews as well as my own kids :)"

When asked about the challenges of being a small business owner, Heaven says, "The most Challenging thing about having my own business would be getting in orders and keeping up with them. It gets hectic at times but I keep pushing myself and make sure my orders are finished in a timely manner and that my customers are satisfied. :)"

Heaven's favorite blogs are RepeatCrafterme and Mad Mad Me. "I love what those ladies have to post and share :) " Her favorites also include the color blue, ice cream, monkeys, & Dr Pepper. Her favorite store is Hobby Lobby, & her favorite way to relax is crocheting.

Take a moment to look at Baby B's Crochet Boutique's Facebook page, and Pinterest board. It is always nice to gain new fans, and make sure to tell her hi from Violet's Buds!
