Strawberry Swing Recap

Strawberry Swing Indie Craft fair was on Sunday, July 28th at the Alexander Majors Barn in KC, MO.

My husband (GipsonWands) & I shared a booth space at the event. We were on the first floor of the barn and had a pretty good view of the festivities. After working for months on procuring & making the hair clip holder frames, and crafting a banner from supplies on hand, I was pleased at how Violet's Buds display turned out.

It was great meeting customers and other businesses in person. Both Kiser Krafts & Unique Creations by Tracy made a special visit to the event. I had a nice time chatting with them both, and Lu & Ed who had a booth at the event too.

Wordless Wednesday- African Violets

These beauties were propagated from plants my grandmother has, which makes them very special to me. As you can see, the lighter bluish blooms are huge in comparison to the purple blooms. Enjoy!

Featured Shop of the Week: Pink Snail Boutique

I am pleased to introduce this week's featured shop, Pink Snail Boutique, owned by Lisa Egan. She is a talented crocheter, and most recently a pattern writer.

Pink Snail Boutique came to being with the help of my husband and my friends. After leaving my out of the home job two years ago I was able to pick up my crochet hooks again. Soon I was crocheting for friends and getting some outside orders. I decided to turn my hobby into an actual business and take it more seriously. I turned to Facebook and started a business page in December of 2011. I now have shops on Etsy and Storenvy as well as my own website/Blog. I am also the mom to three wonderful children and have a beautiful grand daughter. My greatest blessings are being able to stay home with my two younger boys and embark on another year of homeschooling.

The most challenging thing about having a business is the time it takes to do the unseen work. Advertising, promoting, keeping up to date with the latest trends in social networking. There are times I want to hire someone just to figure out Twitter. Blogs are another challenge for me. I have lots of ideas but being able to put those thoughts to words is not my forte.

Yellow Curry Recipe

We have a new guest contributor this week, Ashley from Penelope's Eclectic Closet, who is sharing her Yellow Curry recipe. (I'm going to try it soon too) Enjoy!

Hey guys!

Ashley from Penelope's Eclectic Closet here to talk about food. Because, what else is there really to talk about!?

As moms (and dads and grandmas, etc) we know it's hard to feed families. It's also hard to get them to try new things.

Well, I'm here to say that Yellow Curry is an intense winner in the Poulsen household.

It's super easy to change up! But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Featured Shop of the Week: Heritage Heartcraft

This week our feature shop is the creation of a multi-talented, helpful, compassionate, & creative person- Heritage Heartcraft by Cara Louise. I'll let Cara tell you more about herself & her craft.

logo- designed by graphic artist extraordinaire Mad Queen Mother
Working to keep the delicate art of thread crochet alive and well as I carry on the beautiful art of my grandmother, with every stitch made with love and prayers. Thread crochet certainly doesn't need to be relegated to the 'just for grandmothers' category. While there is a great vintage appeal to the craft, today's vibrant color choices in crochet thread mean that retro can indeed become modern again!

'Royal Pineapple Seraphim', pattern again from Crochet Memories, large 11 inch tall treetop angel, this one worked in ecru and antique white, with gold trim.
Time is a common issue among so many of us. My family-raising days are behind me, it's just me and the husband now, but there's still so many things that need to or ought to get done. It's easy to fall into the trap of 'hobby' thinking, and I really do use my kitchen timer a LOT to schedule things that I either know need doing but don't want to do (like the dishes?!); or things that I like to do but could get WAY too lost in (like Pinterest browsing!). Deciding on a reasonable amount of time to devote to something, and then going gang-busters to 'beat-the-clock' works for me. I really should buy kitchen timers by the dozen I wear through them!

'Pineapple Lace Bikini Shorts', my own pattern, and my first venture into garment design using a classic thread crochet design element.

Making a Solid Wood Crochet Hook

GipsonWands is bringing us another glimpse into his creative process. Today he is showing how he creates solid wood crochet hooks.

In the beginning a crochet hook is made just like a wand (if you haven't read how a wand is made go here) but one striking change is the tip. The tip will need to be carved into the actual hook so I leave the tip thicker. It ends up looking like a bulb on the end of  short wand. For crochet hooks the most important part, aside from the hook, is the shaft-- it has to be the right size. To get the correct diameter of the different sizes, I bought a set of aluminum hooks. I use a caliper to accurately get the measurement. Once I get the hook body done on the lathe and have the shaft to the right size it will look like the photo below,

The handle is done and sanded but the tip still needs to be carved.

Stitching Girl owner Amber says, "I love making crafts and sharing what I can do with others. I would love to make something for you and your family that you will treasure for years to come. You can buy a hat, scarf, or blanket anywhere, but when you buy it from me you are guaranteed that love and care went into making it. I look forward to making you a one of a kind item, because lets face it, no two items will ever be exactly alike when made by hand :)."

"My mom had the biggest influence since she taught me everything I do.  I find it therapeutic to make items and love the challenge of a new pattern.  Most of all I love sharing what I do with others and giving them a handmade item that I thoroughly enjoyed making for them."

She notes, "If you are a photographer I offer a 20% discount on all my items (including custom) if you allow me to use photos containing my items on my Facebook and Etsy pages.
