Editing Spots from Photos

It happens to everyone. You take a series of photos, and download the images. You find the best photo of the bunch, and there it is. Ugh, a hair! (or fuzz, or dirt) Now what?!

Luckily, there is a way to fix most minor blemishes in photo editing programs. Using the cloning tool (aka rubber stamp tool) you can essentially erase the fuzz. This technique, that I will be demonstrating in Photoshop, basically copies an area of your photograph and pastes it where you choose.

Start by selecting the cloning tool (which resembles a rubber stamp), and make sure you have an appropriate brush size. You can change the brush size and shape on the menu at the top.

Next, you will need to define your "source point," the area that you will be copying. To select the source point, hold the Alt key while clicking on the area of the photograph you will be copying/cloning. A plus sign will appear at the source you selected. The circle is the cloning brush. The area inside this circle is what will be replaced.

Careful eliminate any fuzz, dirt, or hair that appears on your image. Remember, that if you make mistakes you can always go back in the history or Edit>Undo.

The cloning tool can take some practice to perfect, but is an easy way to fix minor issues.

Pixlr and  PicMonkey are free editing programs that also have this feature available!

Featured Maker- By Wicked Red

We hope you are enjoying our series as we continue to introduce our favorite makers, indie artists, and small businesses to our social media friends and followers.
This week's featured maker is a fellow Handmade in KC member, by Wicked Red.

What do you create, and how did you get started?
I create beaded jewelry and I upcycle paper to create beads for other designers. I have been making jewelry for 10+years for family, friends, and co-workers. About a year and a half ago I decided to start a small business making jewelry and that evolved into upcycling paper into beads.

What is your business mission and goal?
I design with a classic, timeless look using beautiful crystals and vintage glass beads. Creating paper beads for designers that love the lightweight and uniqueness of paper beads it is upcycling at it's finest :)

What three words describe your shop?
Classic, Timeless, Special

How do you celebrate reaching your goals?
I celebrate fan based goals with my customers. Giving them a give away to win a free gift. I celebrate personal business goals by sitting back with a good TV show, cup of coffee, and a new to-do list.

Which other makers inspire you?
All makers inspire me differently. I am in facebook groups that post their jewelry pieces that inspire me to be creative. Makers that make other things that are not jewelry inspire me to remain productive. Most of the time, designers that buy my paper beads inspire me because I know that they are going to use them to be creative. That might be the ultimate inspiration, knowing that I am creating something that others can use in their creative processes.

What is one thing you couldn't live without?
Ya know...2 broke girls. Two girls that are busting their humps to make their small business work. They make me laugh. I can watch them all day and roll beads....I have done that many many times.

Featured Maker- Pelhuaz

In 2015 our goal is to introduce our favorite makers, indie artists, and small businesses to our social media friends and followers. This week's featured maker is a lovely jewelry creator, (and super sweet person) with a definite sense of style, Pelhuaz.

You may remember Zeide from her previous feature here, and I'm happy to bring you an update on her shop- especially since her new website launched last week!

What do you create, and how did you get started?
I make fabulous indie jewelry. I always loved to create crafts and jewelry and back in 2013 I started an online business in a hosted e-commerce site where I showcase my creations. After much consideration, I recently decided to start my own business in my own website. A very exciting step for my business.

What is your business mission and goal?

Life is too short to wear boring jewelry! That statement covers almost everything. Pelhuaz have exquisite indie jewelry intended to make you apart, look your best, and feel beautiful. I'm a strong believer that an accessory needs to do that... accessorize. For that matter it has to be simple, modern and chic.

My goal is to develop pelhuaz.com to it fullest potential and being able to help my Handmade Community in the process.

What three words describe your shop?
Indie, Handmade, Modern

How do you celebrate reaching your goals?
Most of the time, by doing a happy dance! :D I'm a Mama of a 7 year old and a 4 month old, so my time to celebrate is limited. I love to dance and my kids enjoy looking at a crazy Mama doing her happy dance. If is related to Pelhuaz, I like celebrating with my followers with a giveaway.

Which other makers inspire you?
Well, there are so many crafty friends out there that inspires me...

KRMBAL: She is a doll and is always happy to help. I owe her my beautiful logo.
The Indie A List: When I had no name at the handmade community, Kristina took a leap of faith and accepted me at the Indie A List. Being a A Lister gave me the opportunity to have resources that I wouldn't have without them.
Adore by Nat: She is a friend and a fan and I love her hard work. Even she's miles away, she's always around. Nat is responsible of my cute tags.

Violet Buds: She is a great support and a genius with the camera. The reason my photos looks as look at they do is because of all the tips and suggestions.

Kelly, Cody, Tracy, Hilary, Brittany, Kendace, and so many more that are always there to cheer me up and provide feedback when needed

What is one thing you couldn't live without?
My family... When I read the question, that was the first thing that pop's into my head. I'm not sure who I be without my Girl K, my Pelon (Boldy) and my Tiny Human. They are part of me and I need them as I need the air I breath.

If you ask me for material things, I need praline, bacon, The Black List and coffee. :D

What are you working on currently?
Right now, I'm in the great adventure of managing my own website. It's being a great experience as I've learn to program, mess things up and turn it back the way it were.

Featured Maker- ScrawnyGirl

In 2015 we are introducing many of our favorite makers, indie artists, and small businesses. This week's featured maker is a kawaii artist that I'm obsessed with, ScrawnyGirl.

You may remember Shawna from her first feature here, and I'm happy to bring you an update on her shop!

What do you create, and how did you get started?
I create kawaii vibes with wearable art, inspirational prints + stickers. I'm pretty much taking over the world and making it cute.

My love affair with art and all things cute began at an early age with the influences of Hello Kitty + Lisa Frank. I later went on to graduate from ASU with a BFA in Studio Art, even though my art was considered "too cute" by my professors. Scrawny Girl made its online debut in November of 2013 via Storenvy where I began selling dolls, doing custom illustration work for several small businesses + starting the sticker of the month club.

What three words describe your shop?
quirky, cute, whimsical

How do you celebrate reaching your goals?
Coffee, sweets (including but not limited to: cupcakes, french macarons, Pocky, + gelato), a little retail therapy, and sometimes just watching anime with Asian take out (I love all Asian food, but I love love kimchi!).

Which other makers inspire you?
I am super inspired by Mab Graves (http://mabgraves.com/), her art is amazing and mind blowing. My goal is to own at least one of her pieces by the end of the year. Fingers crossed for a Sailor Moon piece!

What is one thing you couldn't live without?
Sadly, I can't live without my iPhone...I use it for everything (mostly taking pictures of my kiddo) and running my business. Even though I love how easy it makes life, I do put it down and live life (that's one of my pet peeves is people on their phones all the time).

Share your current business goals
My current goals are growth, community + an aesthetic that screams Scrawny Girl. Also, world domination.

I just launched my new website- www.scrawnygirl.com Thankfully I was able to get my domain moved so no one has to update any of their feeds! Woot!

Wake Up Happy

Its easy to wake up in a good mood when your room makes you happy!

collage by X37 Adventures
Room by room, I've been working with my husband on transformations to make our house functional and happy. Out with the old items that sat unused for years- time to donate or dispose!

Last summer my husband created a lovely set of shelves in our bedroom- and ever the resourceful guy he repurposed an old set of wooden bedrails to make them.

Over the last several months we've debated what should go on the shelves. Books? Handmade indie art? Photos? Candles? Finally we decided to bring into our space just the things that make us each happy-  a combo of it all!

HP hoop by Allie & Milo
peg people by Landon's Toy Box
Owl art and owl amigurumi by Crafteroni & Cheese

Rainbow Rain hoop by Violet's Buds

Scooter hoop art by Homespun Happiness
Photographer art print by ScrawnyGirl
Shake It hoop art by Kiser Krafts
Traveler Green by Little Green Guy
Sushi Hoop by Cardinal & Fitz
Elements collage by X37 Adventures

Can you tell which side of the shelves each of us decorated?

What special piece do you have in your home that makes you happy?
